Internships

Welcome students

The Internship Program at Black Hills Energy is far from ordinary. Our interns tackle real-world projects and get a chance to present them to our Leadership Team at our corporate headquarters in Rapid City, South Dakota, (right down the road from Mount Rushmore). All intern projects are designed to enhance the student’s communication and teamwork skills, by collaborating with individuals across all functions within our organization. Interns will also work alongside professionals in their field, gaining in-depth knowledge about the energy industry and their chosen field of expertise. Please contact Talent Team at 800-789-6544 ext.1 if you have any questions relating to an internship with Black Hills Energy.

Hear from our interns

“As an intern I am fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work with an existing system that I haven’t been exposed to before. I am able to collaborate with a growing team of senior developers every day. This opportunity has expanded my knowledge of the utility industry and the impact that this team’s work has on our company. Throughout this past summer, myself and other new hires were trained on the internal system. We were given the opportunity to travel to Omaha, Nebraska, to meet with the remote senior developers on our team. I would highly recommend an internship opportunity with Black Hills Energy.”

Hunter, CIS IT Intern

“I was an intern in Summer 2018 for Black Hills Energy. This experience really helped shape me into the professional I am today for the company. I learned so much from my co-workers in Human Resources during my time as an intern. I was given a variety of projects and tasks to complete that all provided me with challenges to overcome. I am very grateful for the internship as it gave me a sneak peek into what a career would be like in this field and fortunately provided me with a career opportunity, as I am still an employee of Black Hills Energy.”

Shaina, Human Resources Intern

“My opportunity with Black Hills Energy's Neil Simpson Complex this summer has been an amazing one. Not only did I learn a lot about power generation and safety, I got to do a few once in a life time things like detonating a coal shot and climbing the 384’ emissions stack. Thank you to everyone involved in making my internship such a memorable one.”

Emma, Engineering Intern

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time interning at Black Hills Energy, and am grateful to for being offered an extension to continue working in the fall season. In addition to working in a dynamic industry, with strategic leadership and talented employees, I believe my time at Black Hills Energy allowed me to grow, obtain valuable knowledge, and sharpen my competency on a range of skills, ultimately contributing to becoming better prepared in my professional career. I hold this role in high regard and would recommend it to anyone driven for success.”
