This role will directly support the Corporate Accounting function for Black Hills Corporation.  Responsible for the accurate and timely accounting, analysis, and reporting of financial information under the application of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) accounting guidance.  Lead all aspects of the Company’s corporate accounting activities including, but not limited to, regulatory support, internal controls compliance, and process improvement.

SALARY RANGE:   $105,050 - $173,450 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee daily accounting operations for the Corporate Accounting department.
  • Ensure monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements are completed accurately and timely including account reconciliations, financial statement analysis and supporting documentation.
  • Review and analyze monthly financial statements with team for accuracy and reasonableness.
  • Continually identify opportunities for increased efficiency and effectiveness; implement and document process changes while maintaining effective internal controls and accurate financial information; and support special accounting system enhancement projects.
  • Lead SOX compliance activities.  Oversee ongoing definition, implementation and management of internal controls to maintain accurate financial statements and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with Company accounting policies and procedures.
  • Support and coordinate internal / external audit, quarterly review, SOX review, and regulatory data requests, ensuring timely and accurate supporting documentation is presented in a useful and understandable format.
  • Maintain a competent, effective and motivated accounting team.
  • Maintain a current working knowledge of accounting rules and regulations and how those may impact Company activities, including GAAP, FERC, and SOX requirements.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Must establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with accounting co-workers, as well as other finance and regulatory functions, utility operations, internal audit, external audit, and management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of (7) seven years of progressive accounting and/or finance experience or finance experience in a regulated utility industry and/or publicly traded SEC reporting company required. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Proven leadership experience.
  • Proficiency in automated accounting systems.  
  • Solid understanding of and experience in regulated utility industry.
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP and FERC guidelines and reporting requirements, with practical application through business and accounting methods and procedures, is required.
  • Experience defining, implementing and managing SOX internal controls.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Problem solving and analytical skills; strategic thinker; and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective internal and external business relationships through excellent written and verbal communication.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if moving about is only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment: Routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. Willing to travel occasionally (less than 10 days per year) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Must have proper licensing to operate a motor vehicle.
