This position will have assignments designed to utilize and enhance knowledge of the energy industry as well as strategic planning skills for handling technical issues. Work generally has a high degree of complexity and requires strong leadership skills as well as a high level of technical competence in electrical engineering with general knowledge of other areas within the utilities.

SALARY RANGE:   $95,350 - $157,300 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:   Substation Engineering Manager

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide expert engineering leadership and guidance on multiple substation projects. Independently lead planning, project management, and oversight activities for projects. Create detailed electrical system layouts, plans, material lists and construction arrangement drawings.
  • Identify engineering problems and opportunities for improvement. Lead initiatives to improve and implement revised standards as needed. Keep department abreast of industry challenges and communicate areas for technical improvements.
  • Understand and apply experienced knowledge of advanced concepts, practices and procedures of particular field of engineering. 
  • Perform complex and unique analysis. Create and implement new/alternative approaches and solutions to problems. Demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving unprecedented engineering problems. Provide sound independent recommendations and functional strategy.
  • Identify and lead complex process improvements. Lead change management efforts.
  • Leadership role in day-to-day work of others. Train other employees on complex tasks. Act as mentor in areas of expertise to broaden perspectives of peers. 
  • Maintain a safe work environment. Show leadership in demonstrating BHE's safety policies, procedures and stop work authority. Lead safety initiatives and be seen as a safety role model.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support system operations group during outages and emergencies.
  • Perform work in close proximity to energized electrical facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant engineering experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Superb verbal and written communication skills; sets the example for others to follow. 
  • Ability to present technical information to cross-functional teams. 
  • Proactively communicate with internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to interact in a team environment and provide constructive feedback to peers and management.
  • Expert knowledge of network design, standards and system operations.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite - Excel, Word, Power Point, Project and Outlook.
  • Ability to maintain proficiency with new systems and software as technology evolves.

Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work environment: Routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height or close quarters. Willing to travel up to 15% (e.g., 3.5 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job and the employee must have proper licensing to operate a motor vehicle.
