The Corporate Planning & ESG Manager plays a critical role for Black Hills Energy, supporting the development and communication of the company’s strategic priorities and ESG strategies. This position partners in managing the process of facilitating strategic planning by providing leaders with decision making frameworks, thought leadership, detailed analysis, and clear communication and synthetization of sophisticated topics. Additionally, this position leads teams responsible for drafting and project managing ESG disclosures and data governance strategic plan documents, leadership reports, and ESG and strategy dashboards.

SALARY RANGE:   $95,350 - $157,300  (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

LOCATION: Our Corporate Headquarters in Rapid City, South Dakota

  • Applies strategic and analytic skills, keen business and emotional intelligence to support business leaders and their teams to define enterprise-wide strategies and solve sophisticated business issues.
  • Supports and coordinates business planning through activities such as scenario planning, environmental evaluations, financial assessments, contingency planning, and other analysis of various strategic topics.
  • Handles and evolves development of the annual sustainability report and ESG disclosures and support integration of strategic and ESG messages in other key results.  
  • Leads and synthesizes collaborator interviews and engages in other research methods to gather information relevant to assigned projects (quantitative and qualitative, internal and market related).
  • Develops and leads corporate planning and ESG project work plans and status dashboards, coordinating with other departments and identifying/mitigating potential risks and issues.
  • Leads team responsible for carrying out a systematic approach to coordinate enterprise-wide ESG data collection efforts to support validation, analysis, objectives and reporting by implementing a data collection platform to track CR/ESG goal-related metrics disclosure information in keeping with standard methodologies for the industry. 
  • Nurtures and uses meaningful partner relationships to develop recommendations for strategic and operational improvements to influence critical initiative prioritization and future investments.
  • Partners with Growth & Strategy team members to advise business case development that shapes corporate and ESG strategy. 
  • Shapes compelling stories and points of view, roadmaps, and other results for key partners. Handle strategic and ESG content for internal/external communication tools and platforms, ensuring messages are accurate, engaging and relevant to collaborators. 


  • Provides leadership in planning of key internal strategy communication opportunities, including in-person leadership events and employee meetings. 
  • Develops and handles reporting calendar and coordination of reporting, partnering with other key process owners to advise and align priorities and results with strategy.
  • Define and be responsible for organization-level goals and key performance indicators, identify pivot points and monitor for deviations from strategic plan. Sensibly communicate up/down/across the organization to ensure transparency and alignment.


  • Minimum of (5) five years of experience in strategic planning, business planning, consulting, project management, ESG/corporate responsibility, communications, marketing, or similar field required. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, sustainability or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required. 


  • Corporate planning, change management, and discernment with demonstrated experience managing collaborative processes and delivering results. 
  • Sustainability, corporate social responsibility and environmental, social and governance reporting, with knowledge of Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure a plus.
  • Analytic and quantitative frameworks/models to assess the feasibility of new opportunities, analyze financial and operational performance, and support decision-making by senior leadership.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to deliver presentations to a wide variety of audiences –up to and including executive level and C-Suite executives.
  • Understanding of data governance and ability to manage processes with high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Expert level organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work independently and prioritize multiple projects and assignments.
  • Ability to convert multiple partner needs into planning frameworks and analyses, ESG reports and disclosures, providing guidance and thought partnership to internal collaborators.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and provide effective development and mentoring to peers and team members.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of information sources, including market research, ESG data, policies and trends to extrapolate relevant information and impact to business.
  • Proficiency in electronic data management systems and computer applications including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee continuously accesses, inputs, and retrieves electronic information and communicates regarding the information.  Employee frequently moves about the office space. Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if moving about is only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment: Routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. Willing to travel occasionally (less than 10 days per year) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Must have proper licensing to operate a motor vehicle.
