Job Specifications

The Instrument Technician will perform plant instrumentation and electrical functions.  Provide technical support for the plant programmable controllers, distributive control and instrumentation systems (DCIS), and related electrical and instrument control equipment for coal fired steam generating and gas combustion turbine processes.

PAY RANGE:  $31.30 - $47.04 per hour (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:   Operations & Maintenance Manager

LOCATION:   Gillette, Wyoming

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Work under minimal supervision to repair, service and maintain plant instrumentation, controls and electrical equipment, combustion turbines and generators.
  • Maintain plant DCIS/PLC control systems and related equipment, including programming changes, troubleshooting, and required preventative and corrective maintenance.
  • Use PIDs, manuals, and other sources to troubleshoot control of operating plant systems and review and update logic drawings.
  • Build and perform procedures related to corrective and preventative maintenance of instrumentation, controls and electrical systems.
  • Maintain documentation records of calibration, tests, and certification of electrical and instrument equipment.
  • Work with and direct contractors and their activities on assigned projects.
  • Communicate work progress to manager/supervisor.
  • Assist Operations department as assigned.
  • Apply the work management process to document and report work requested, assigned, and completed.
  • Report abnormal operation to plant management and O&M supervisor.
  • Support scheduled and unscheduled call-out support as needed.
  • Perform work in accordance with OSHA safety standards applicable to power plants.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform general housekeeping duties.
  • Maintain plant logs on equipment operation.
  • Work safely, following company policies, procedures and work practices in a positive, professional manner.
  • Provide information for various plant reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience working on electrical equipment required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Calibration and maintenance of process control equipment.
  • Working knowledge of coal fired and combustion turbine power generation plant equipment and system processes.
  • Working knowledge of test equipment, signal generators, relay test sets, oscilloscopes, and personal computers.
  • Working knowledge of ABB DCIS (S+ and Harmony), and/or Micronet, Nexus.
  • Working knowledge of PLC basics, preferably Allen Bradley.
  • Working knowledge of basic computer networking.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to learn plant processes and interpret data.
  • Ability to interpret control drawings and PIDs.
  • Skilled in configuring and tuning Distributive Control System and PLCs.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office (i.e., Word and Excel).
  • Perform work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work on high voltage systems.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and a variety of aerial equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee continuously moves about the job site and operates machines and equipment, ascends/descends stairs and ladders, maintains coordination, and works at elevated heights.  Employee frequently balances, engages in repetitive motions (kneeling, reaching) and uses a respirator. Employee may occasionally remain sedentary. Employee operates job related equipment and tools. Employee routinely performs this work for an average of 8-12 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Regular, reliable, and timely attendance is expected. 

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work environment: Routinely perform work indoors subject to sometimes high temperatures. Routinely perform work outdoors in sometimes inclement weather with moderate to high noise level. Worker may be subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height or close quarters (i.e., crawl spaces, small-enclosed rooms, narrow aisles of passageways), as well as maneuver in, over or around obstacles. Worker may be subject to vibration such as oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body. Willing to travel occasionally (less than 10 days per year) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities.
