Job Specifications

Provide engineering services to our natural gas utility operations in multiple states.  Comply with industry regulations.  Work in partnership with state operations to ensure safe, reliable service to customers.  Performs system analysis and recommends remedial actions and measures.  Manages a variety of natural gas projects under supervision.  Participate on cross functional teams to support the company's natural gas business.

SALARY RANGE:   $69,800 - $104,800 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)


LOCATION: This position can be located in Council Bluffs, Iowa or Dubuque, Iowa.

  • Provides general engineering support and service to natural gas operations in the company’s multiple state natural gas business.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Participate as a teammate in pipeline safety activities.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Work as team member to achieve department goals.
  • Recommends improvements for work processes across the department or project. 
  • Maintains a successful partnership with operations.
  • Ability to anticipate and solve a range of problems by analyzing possible solutions using standard engineering procedures.


  • Assists in providing professional services elsewhere in the company’s energy business, as requested.
  • Participates in community relations-based activities
  • Travel as necessary to support activities for Natural Gas Utility Operations.
  • Participate in state and federal audits
  • With supervision, partners with state and federal pipeline safety commissions
  • Partners with operations managers, supervisors, and technicians.  Contact with vendors, suppliers, industry associations.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of two (2) years of gas industry experience; with proven knowledge of natural gas operations required.  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution required.


  • Basic understanding of natural gas engineering principles.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering examination preferred.
  • Working knowledge of 49 CFR Part 192.
  • Working knowledge of industry and personal safety practices.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency    
  • Basic knowledge of the company's support functions including but not limited to Finance, Accounting, IT, HR and Supply Chain. 
  • Proficient in word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Effective presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to thoroughly document analytical work.
  • Must be a team player, self-starter, energetic, and proactive.

Employee may occasionally: climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and reach. Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include:  Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if moving about is only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment:  Routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height or close quarters. Willing to travel up to 25% (e.g. 1 week or 5 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job and the employee must have proper licensing to operate a motor vehicle.
