The person in this role will be accountable for leading all aspects of the gas supply portfolio for Black Hills Energy, including oversight of load forecasting and planning, physical and financial portfolio management, gas supply purchases, hedge strategy and execution, negotiation of pipeline services, and compliance with company policy, pipeline requirements and state and federal regulations. 

SALARY RANGE:   $121,700 - $200,650 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

This position is responsible for developing gas supply strategy and leading the gas supply functions for all Black Hills Energy gas utility and natural gas-fired electric generation activity, which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Leads a staff of approximately 15 employees, located in 3 regional offices.
  • Negotiating for contracted services on numerous interstate and intrastate gas pipelines.
  • Gas supply purchase negotiations, including Requests for Proposals and contract execution.
  • Develop and be prepared to implement peak day and emergency backup supply plans.
  • Financial and physical gas hedge strategy and execution.
  • Adhering to regulatory requirements in all states where BHE conducts business, including company tariffs and state regulations, as well as federal regulations.
  • Work with Senior Managers and forecasting team to develop, implement and execute daily, monthly and annual gas supply plans and communicate plans (and results) to stakeholders, which includes formal filings with state commissions and in-person plan presentations. 
  • Drafting and presenting testimony, as necessary, in support of regulated gas supply plans and activity, as well as to address interstate pipeline rate activity.
  • Successfully and positively direct Gas Supply Services personnel and functions, 
  • Actively support and oversee all aspects of planning, forecasting, analysis, natural gas pipeline nominations, gas purchases and sales, capacity release, curtailment, contracting, LNG dispatch, and other functions as required.  
  • Have a working commercial and operations knowledge of natural gas, natural gas-fired generation, RNG and LNG to support growth and project execution.
  • Collaborate with state leaders, Finance, Legal, Regulatory, Growth and Engineering teams on special projects to enhance reliability and support growth.
  • Regularly attending seminars and events in the energy industries.
  • Plan and perform special projects related to integration of newly acquired business units, or integration activities related to existing businesses, as assigned.
  • Provide ongoing support to BHC’s Leadership Team, by performing in various special projects as assigned and aligned with our strategic plan and focus.
  • Maintain the appropriate level of confidentiality for each project or business activity.

The Director, Gas Supply Services is responsible for financial management including:

  • Revenue generation of $5-$7 million annually through state-approved programs.
  • Managing nearly $500 million annually in commodity costs and pipeline charges.
  • Developing and managing a department budget to include travel, training and outside services expenses.
  • Develop short-, medium- and long-term gas supply plans designed to ensure safe, reliable and prudent gas supply services for BHE utility customers.
  • Provide support to Finance and Regulatory teams to ensure accurate data is reported to meet state and federal filing requirements.
  • Partner with Accounting to ensure proper month-end actualization of pipeline and supplier invoices.
  • Review and approve team time and expense submittals. 


  • Ability to professionally and effectively communicate with various levels of leadership, via written and verbal communication measures.
  • Actively participate in meetings and discussions across the enterprise related to growth, strategy and operations.
  • Support the evaluation of existing and potential innovative growth projects for the company
  • Other duties, as assigned.
  • Willing to travel and work necessary overtime hours in a deadline-oriented environment.


  • Minimum of ten years of experience in energy related or utility industries, particularly in the areas of valuation methods and business strategies required. 
  • Areas of expertise should include federal and state regulated environments; non-regulated experience including upstream, midstream and downstream (retail or wholesale) marketing. Proven track record of transactional execution, in regulated and non-regulated environments. A minimum of ten years’ experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, (preferably with an emphasis in business, mathematics, finance or other business-related field), or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Background in corporate or business development, investment banking or public accounting preferred.


  • Broad knowledge of electric and gas utilities 
  • Broad knowledge of state and federal regulatory principles related to the natural gas market
  • Broad knowledge of the upstream, midstream, and downstream regulated and non-regulated natural gas market
  • Knowledge of corporate systems and software, including PeopleSoft, Business Objects and gas management applications 
  • Ability to see the long-term impact of decisions and strategies
  • Must be able to communicate complex concepts and ideas into simple descriptions that are understandable by non-experts
  • Strong leadership skills to create a positive and engaged work environment
  • Ability to mentor and develop staff
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously (67% or more) required to: use fingers and hands, communicate, and have close visual acuity. Employee is frequently (34-66%) required to: ascend/descend stairs, position self to access lower items, and move about the office. The employee may occasionally (less than 33%) be required to: crouch and reach. Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. Must be capable of up to 15% travel (e.g. 3.5 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job, and the employee must have the ability to drive and have proper licensing.
