The Manager Finance I, Corporate Accounting is responsible for accurate and timely accounting, analysis, and reporting of Black Hills Corporation’s financial information. This position is responsible for all aspects of the Company’s corporate accounting including ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rules and regulations, specific jurisdictional regulatory requirements, and Sarbanes-Oxley.

SALARY RANGE:   $73,000 - $110,000 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Partner with the Corporate Accounting Sr Manager to lead and oversee the Corporate Accounting Department.
  • Provide vision and leadership to ensure the accurate and timely accounting for all of the Company’s transactions.
  • Develop a competent, effective and motivated accounting team. Direct and coach to deliver against accountabilities.
  • Direct the development, improvement, implementation, and maintenance of processes to ensure accurate and timely accounting and analysis of accounting information.
  • Drive process improvements through identifying and leveraging industry best practices across the organization.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in all areas of corporate accounting.
  • Oversee the monthly close process including consolidation, financial statement analysis, and review of account reconciliations and review of journal entries.
  • Ensure accounting policies and procedures are evolving appropriately.
  • Play an integral role in cross-functional teams on data requests to support Company regulatory initiatives.
  • Maintain solid understanding of state specific requirements related to regulatory assets and liabilities.
  • Ensure complete, accurate, and timely reporting to company stake holders.
  • Partner with teams in finance and accounting to provide timely support and accurate financial statements.
  • Be a strategic partner to the Regulatory Department to assist with planning, analysis, and rate review support.
  • Ensure appropriate internal controls are in place, documented and operating effectively to maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting in accordance and in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • Provide ongoing current GAAP and FERC knowledge with respect to new standards and emerging issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must have strong supervisory skills, as this position requires the individual to delegate, monitor, and review assignments as well as coach staff to higher levels of performance.  
  • Provide for the effective selection, development, and performance management of your team.   

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor Science in Accounting/Finance or related discipline required.
  • Five (5) plus years of accounting/financial and business experience required.
  • Solid understanding of, and experience in accounting required.
  • A solid understanding of internal controls over financial reporting is required.
  • Utility accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • CPA, MPA, CMA or MBA preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • A thorough knowledge of GAAP, including business and accounting methods and procedures.
  • A strong understanding of internal controls.
  • A working understanding of FERC accounting, utility operations and a basic understanding of regulatory/ratemaking processes and methods is preferred.
  • Proficiency in automated accounting systems.
  • Ability to direct department and prioritize projects and work consistent with Company goals.
  • Ability to apply strong attention to detail while understanding and considering the big picture.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to drive process improvements.
  • Strong oral and written skills, ability to communicate difficult accounting topics to various levels.
  • Ability to drive effective decisions through use of GAAP, FERC and other accounting research.
  • Ability to perform accounting duties of an above average difficulty.
  • Strong computer and analytical skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of business information.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team leader.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously (67% or more) required to: use fingers and hands, communicate, and have close visual acuity. Employee is frequently (34-66%) required to: ascend/descend stairs, position self to access lower items, and move about the office. The employee may occasionally (less than 33%) be required to: stoop, crouch and reach. Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. Must be capable of up to 10% travel (e.g. 2 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job, and the employee must have the ability to drive and have proper licensing.
