Job Description

CLOSING DATE: This position will close on March 6, 2020.

Support and assist with various non-hot line projects as assigned within the Company’s Line Operations Department.  These projects will be assigned consistent with the Company’s Internship Program with an emphasis on developing an understanding of the Company’s multiple business units and enhancing the intern’s ability to apply his/her education in a business environment.

PAY:  $18.00 per hour (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Area Operations Supervisor

LOCATION:  Rapid City, SD

  • Intern Relocation Adjustment Allowance of $1,000.00 is offered for the purpose of assisting with various expenses associated with your relocation for the internship (less applicable taxes and based on eligibility). Contents of our relocation program are subject to change and may vary based on position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist and follow instructions of the Lead Line Mechanic and Line Mechanic in constructing, maintaining, and removing lines (overhead and underground).

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Observe all safety rules and line work procedures.
  • Prepare and present a synopsis of experience with the Company at the end of the internship.
  • Must possess a valid South Dakota Commercial Driver's license, at least Class A, with air brake endorsement, or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Power Line Construction and Maintenance Program diploma required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of construction methods, materials, hand tools and their use.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical standards for construction of the electrical system, methods and materials.
  • Basic knowledge of construction equipment for overhead and underground construction.
  • Must have ability to frame poles and have basic knowledge of the tools required for line construction.
  • Must have ability to climb poles.
  • Ability to operate, care for, and maintain tools and equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously (67% or more) required to: stand, walk, balance, bend or stoop, crawl, work at elevated heights, maintain eye and hand coordination, maintain finger and hand dexterity, hear, rotate and extend neck, maintain body posture, reach, talk, and have visual acuity to operate machines and equipment. Employee is frequently (34-66%) required to: access low and high areas with additional equipment, ascend/descend stairs, maintain hand and foot coordination, move hands in repetitive motion, kneel, reach above the shoulder, and sit. The employee may occasionally (less than 33%) be required to sit. Employee must be able to operate job related equipment and tools. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 8-10 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance. 

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work environment: Must be able to occasionally perform work indoors and routinely perform work outdoors in sometimes inclement weather with moderate to high noise level. Worker may be subject to hazards including variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height, or close quarters (i.e., crawl spaces, small enclosed rooms, narrow aisles of passageways). No travel is required for this role.
