Job Description

We are looking for a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented professional to join our strong Business Development Team. You will be responsible for managing a group of customers/markets to achieve designated margin/revenue goals. You will be expected to possess and apply detailed product/service knowledge. You will be responsible for analyzing current and potential customer segments, identifying opportunities to generate additional margin/revenue, and retaining long-term customer relationships with established clients. You will research industries to understand their customer base and emerging trends to recommend solutions for their customers.  You will also maintain active account management engagements with current customers to ensure retention and satisfaction.

SALARY RANGE:     $68,450 - $102,750 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Supports the project management, analysis and coordination across the business and external partners to connect customers to individualized energy solutions, company programs (EE/DSM, etc.) and potential external partner solutions.
  • Supports the development of new regulated and non-regulated energy solutions by gaining a thorough understanding of customer business drivers and needs.
  • Builds and leverages key sales networks including trade allies, builders and developers.
  • Support the contract development and the negotiations process with new and existing large, complex customers.
  • Helps implement growth strategies, participate in business meetings, and recommend changes to existing business practices to increase margin and revenue. 
  • Improves the customer’s experience through increased and detailed communications, keeping them abreast of changes in rates, riders and anything pertaining to their account. 
  • Partners with customer service functions, operations, community affairs, engineering, legal and other internal departments to help resolve customer problems.
  • Maintains current knowledge of tariff rates and regulations and helps identify challenges and opportunities of rate design and other regulatory practices.
  • Be a champion for growth with field personnel and through participation in business unit growth teams and any subsequent projects.
  • Continually surveil for new growth opportunities through expansions to new customers/markets, acquisitions, and new solution offerings.
  • Responsible for customer retention, proactive client management, load forecast accuracy, and driving usage with customers and prospects in collaboration with internal teams.
  • Tracks and reports results.
  • Understands financial models and data analytics to help assess growth opportunities. 
  • Provides support for new/existing growth initiatives.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a member/leader of growth teams at the state/jurisdiction level.
  • Partner with the Energy Efficiency Program Manager and remain informed of programs offered for the purpose of educating and promoting the programs and assisting customers with solutions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3+ years of business development, strategic account management, sales experience, or relevant experience that would provide a foundation for successful sales ability and motivation required.
  • Prior energy or utility industry experience a strong plus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, marketing or related area preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Strong understanding of customer and market dynamics and requirements.
  • Knowledge of electric and/or natural gas quality terminology and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of energy policy, national and local building codes.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices for delivering sustainable energy products and services for commercial and industrial customers. 
  • Thorough knowledge of tariff rates and regulations.
  • Driven to help customers succeed by connecting them to energy solutions.
  • Strong initiative, organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to prioritize, ensure timely follow-up and complete multiple projects in a judicious manner.
  • Awareness and understanding of all regulatory complaints and ensure that in each case, learn from the customer and apply those learnings to all key accounts. 
  • Ability to negotiate and mitigate risk related to business development agreements.  
  • Ability to quickly analyze issues, prepare comprehensive analysis and recommend solutions and alternatives for identifying/solving specific issues.
  • Ability to think and act commercially by constantly evaluating current market, customer and industry dynamics to originate new growth opportunities.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Problem resolution skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team building and customer service skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of business information.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously (67% or more) required to: use fingers and hands, communicate, and have close visual acuity. Employee is frequently (34-66%) required to: ascend/descend stairs, position self to access lower items, and move about the office. The employee may occasionally (less than 33%) be required to: reach, pull, push, crouch, and kneel. Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level, and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height, or close quarters. Must be capable of up to 10% travel (e.g. 2 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job, and the employee must have the ability to drive and have proper licensing.
