Job Description

In this role the Vehicle Mechanic will perform maintenance and repairs to Company Fleet resources as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:   Electric Utility Fleet Supervisor

LOCATION:   Rapid City, SD 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible to complete assignments, directives, schedules and programs assigned by Management.
  • Maintenance of equipment and vehicles.  
  • Performs DOT, Dielectric and PM inspections as required.
  • Assist with job coordination for timely completion of work, this includes working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leads and assists with procurement, repair, maintenance, and retirement of fleet assets.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for completing assigned tasks equivalent or lower than this classification.
  • Responsible for participating in the training of fellow employees.
  • Responsible for upkeep and possession of power tools and equipment. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) or more years’ fleet automotive and equipment maintenance required. 
  • Associates Degree in diesel technology or related field required.
  • Must obtain a valid South Dakota Driver’s License (CDL) Class A within 90 days hire date and maintain it as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to obtain automotive mechanics certification to include: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), Hydraulics (National Fluid Power Int.), SD and DOT inspection, VON DC dielectric, and welding experience (transportation only), aerial operator training, aerial inspections.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to problem solve and understand the operations of company vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate with assigned crew, co-workers, management and general public.  
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve equipment failures in a timely manner
  • Able to perform work safely and alert other employees of safety hazards in the area.
  • Skilled at complying with applicable safety standards, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Must be willing to work overtime.
  • Working conditions may include inclement weather and potential of electrical hazards.
  • Willingness to travel to remote areas to perform work.

Mental Requirements:  Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level, and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height, or close quarters.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously (67% or more) required to: stand, walk, balance, bend or stoop, crawl, work at elevated heights, maintain eye and hand coordination, maintain finger and hand dexterity, hear, rotate and extend neck, maintain body posture, reach, talk, and have visual acuity to operate machines and equipment. Employee is frequently (34-66%) required to: access low and high areas with additional equipment, ascend/descend stairs, maintain hand and foot coordination, move hands in repetitive motion, kneel, reach above the shoulder, and sit. Employee must be able to operate job related equipment and tools. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 8-10 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance. 

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include:  Very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level, and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height, or close quarters.  Must be capable of occasional travel (less than 10 days per year) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities.
