Job Specifications

Manage day-to-day mid-office functions of Black Hills Energy. Ensure that practices are in full compliance with applicable standards, regulatory requirements, and the company’s risk policies. The Risk Manager will be integrally involved in the development, implementation and monitoring of prudent policies, procedures, and programs to address internal and external risk mitigation and compliance requirements.  In addition, the Risk Manager will be specifically responsible for daily risk reporting to ensure completeness and compliance with risk policies, procedures, and limits, as well as providing risk analysis for proposed transactions.  In addition, the Manager will support a comprehensive risk analysis to help leadership understand and address the broad range of risks at both enterprise and operational levels and by ensuring cost effective programs are implemented to mitigate risks.

SALARY RANGE:  $110,900 - $183,100 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Sr. Manager – Risk and Internal Controls

LOCATION: Our corporate headquarters in Rapid City, South Dakota.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage all company mid-office functions, including activity associated with both natural gas and power transactions.
  • Compile and/or monitor daily reporting to ensure compliance with Risk policies. Includes reviewing natural gas and power transactions and related activity daily for compliance with internal control requirements, company risk policies and applicable laws and regulations, including FERC and NERC regulations.
  • Manage the contracts administration and confirmation processes in accordance with company risk policies and standard practices.  
  • Provide oversight and significant input regarding systems of record associated with natural gas and power transactions, including responsibility for monitoring, and maintaining appropriate system access and maximizing system capabilities to minimize manual work, create efficiencies and reduce risk.
  • Provide risk analysis related to current commodity portfolios and complex transactions put forward by the Front Office (Natural Gas and Power) and business development.
  • Manage the filing of certain regulatory filings, such as Electronic Quarterly Reports (EQRs) and FERC Market Based Rate (MBR) filings.
  • Maintain a current, solid understanding of requirements associated with company policies, internal controls, and applicable regulatory standards, as well as risk management practices.
  • Participate in and lead internal routine risk meetings and risk management training. 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the accurate preparation, review, and processing of confirmations to/from counterparts.
  • Understand the risk tolerance of the company and assist in guiding to appropriately consider risk as part of the decision-making process.
  • Support, as needed, the company’s review and response to regulatory concerns and inquiries. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of (7) seven years of progressive experience in energy marketing, risk management or related roles(s).
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in accounting, finance, or related field required or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Solid understanding of the energy markets (i.e., MISO, SPP, ERCOT, etc.) 
  • Understanding physical and financial Power and Natural Gas market transactions
  • Ability to make decisions independently and take initiative while considering risk impacts. 
  • Solid understand of risk-based decision making. 
  • Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks and projects concurrently while ensuring quality and timely delivery.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.  Ability to communicate to complex concepts to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to work with a team, in both an open office environment and potentially remotely using technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both internal and external.
