Provide day to day supervision of substation maintenance and construction crews with their job responsibilities including overall coordination of maintenance, installation and testing activities as it relates to the electrical and mechanical equipment associated with substation, line, and AC to DC converter station operations.  Includes but is not limited to transformers, arrestors, circuit breakers, regulators, capacitor banks, reactor banks, reclosers, disconnect devices, controls, batteries, buildings, dynamic VAR compensators and grounds.  Plan and manage resources for construction in capital improvement and additional projects, including panel construction, equipment installation, wiring, testing and related activities.  

SALARY RANGE:   $87,600 - $144,400 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Instruct and ensure all crew members complete work in accordance with the Company’s established safety policies and construction standards and practices. 
  • Schedule work activities in a fair manner to develop and train team members and apprentices while also demonstrating individual strengths and abilities.
  • Support and lead project and maintenance planning by setting up equipment and material requirements as well scheduling outage requests in accordance with applicable Company policies
  • Support, develop and lead safety initiatives and address safety concerns within the workgroup. This includes JHAs, safety audits, and safety processes and programs.
  • Communicate work status, concerns, or questions on projects and equipment issues to involved parties. 
  • Support crews with testing of all equipment including, but not limited to: AC and DC insulation testing, High Current Low Resistance Testing, high current trip/reclosing testing, transformer ratio testing, dissolved gas in oil sampling, oil quality testing, contact/connection resistance testing, circuit breaker motion analysis, SF6 gas moisture testing, SF6 Corrosive Sulfur Testing, battery and strap impedance, specific gravity testing, electronic control testing and DOBLE power factor testing and excitation.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC requirements according to the BHC Protection System Maintenance Program and other applicable policies. 
  • Support crews with emergency response and troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical equipment and control problems.
  • Responsible for compliance and record keeping documentation (electronic and hardcopy) of all maintenance, emergency response assignments, installation standards, and work procedures established by the Company.  Provide and interpret reports as requested and support continuous improvement of these activities.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support and lead continuous improvement efforts that directly impact the substation maintenance group. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum three (3) years of electrical engineering or other relevant experience required. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code, power system safety standards and safe clearance procedures. 
  • Good working knowledge of electrical substations and associated equipment as well as associated control systems.
  • Working knowledge of NERC reliability compliance standards.
  • Understanding of hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatics systems.    
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite - Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Ability to learn and maintain proficiency with new systems and software as technology evolves.
  • Skills in leadership and participation in cross functional utility teams.
  • Strong ability to document, track, coordinate and direct the work of technicians, maintenance personnel and consulting engineers assigned to projects and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, manufacturers’ equipment manuals and make revisions as necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee continuously moves about the office and the job sites and operates machines and equipment. Employee frequently accesses low and high areas with additional equipment, ascends/descends stairs, maintains coordination, and engages in repetitive motions (kneeling, reaching). Employee may occasionally use a respirator. Employee operates job related equipment and tools. Employee routinely performs this work for an average of 8-10 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Regular, reliable, and timely attendance is expected. 

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include light work. The employee is continuously moving about the job site or office space. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of reaching and moving controls exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Work environment: Routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height or close quarters. Willing to travel up to 15% (e.g., 3.5 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job and the employee must have proper licensing to operate a motor vehicle.
