As a Gas Design Engineer, you will assist in providing engineering services to our natural gas utility operations in multiple states under guidance from the Engineering Manager. You will fulfill industry regulations, work in partnership with state operations to ensure safe, reliable service to customers, and participate on multi-functional teams to support the company's natural gas business.

SALARY RANGE:  Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.

  • Level I:  $60,350 - $90,600
  • Level II:  $71,550 - $107,400
  • Senior Level: $78,200 - $117,300

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:    Design Engineering Manager

LOCATION:   This position may be located in Council Bluffs or Dubuque, Iowa, Lincoln or Kearney, Nebraska.

  • Relocation financial assistance is available, amount may vary based on individual circumstances.


  • Provide basic engineering support and service to natural gas operations in the company’s multiple state natural gas business.
  • Participate in various projects concurrently.
  • Work as team member to achieve department goals.
  • Maintain a successful partnership with operations leadership and personnel.
  • Ability to analyze information, problem solve and troubleshoot technical and operational issues.
  • Frequent interactions with vendors, suppliers, industry associations.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by adopting basic knowledge of personal and industry safety principles. 


  • Participate in community relations-based activities, where desired and where interest exists.
  • Participate in state and federal audits.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering is required.
  • Level I:  No experience required. Entry level training provided.
  • Level II:  Minimum of one (1) year of gas industry experience with proven knowledge of natural gas operations required.
  • Senior Level: Minimum of four (4) years of gas industry experience with proven knowledge of natural gas operations required.


  • Demonstrated technical understanding.
  • Ability to thoroughly document analytical work.
  • Skilled in the use of word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs. 
  • Proficient writing and editing skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Self-starter, energetic, proactive, and a team player.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if moving about is only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment: Routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height or close quarters. Willing to travel up to 25% (e.g., 1 week or 5 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job and the employee must have proper licensing to operate a motor vehicle.
